How technology can be an ally in the learning process

In the past, the use of technology in education was seen with some apprehension, not least because computers, cell phones and other electronic devices were seen as unwelcome distractions to the school environment.

However, much has changed in the last two decades, due to the technological boom that has impacted the way we relate, communicate and interact with the world around us. And the impacts that this change brought to our lives also apply to education.

Today, technology is part of our everyday lives - and for children and teenagers it is no different. Therefore, ignoring this aspect so present in everyone's routine would be a huge disservice to students. After all, they were born connected and did not know the world without the internet.

It is possible to see technology at school and in modern teaching as an ally, inserting more interactive content that is attractive to students, making approaches more playful and activities more dynamic.

Technology is a part of life

As previously discussed, it is unfeasible (and practically impossible) to disassociate everyday technology from people's lives. In education, we know that lectures are not the ones that bring the best results for learning.

Nowadays, to use the facilities and practical tools that new technologies offer is an extremely constructive way of engaging students to find solutions to problems proposed in the classroom.

It is also worth mentioning that the use of technology is not restricted to the school environment, since nowadays we are all surrounded by devices that were created precisely to make our lives easier. Within this new paradigm, education must take into account that the way we live has changed, and, consequently, teaching has to evolve to provide a learning process that is richer and more relevant to the real world.

Thus, students can count on a stronger sense of identification between their school activities and the other experiences of their lives. This more relevant approach to their worldviews allows methodologies that are more focused on solving problems in practical ways to have greater impact.

Good practices for using technology at school and its benefits

So far, we have mentioned the positive impact that the use of technologies has within school environments and their relationship with the students' daily lives, but, in addition, we must point out some of the practical advantages that the use of these technologies can bring to the school routine. Meet 4 of them:

  1. More organization:
Today there are several tools that allow both teachers and students to be more organized in an integrated way regarding the execution and delivery of school activities.
  2. More support in language classes:
In language subjects and in bilingual education in general, pronunciation matters a lot, but it can be a challenge for some students. There are specialized tools to offer this support to resolve doubts about pronunciation or grammatical structures.
  3. Support tools integration:
The teacher will not always be available to assist a student who is facing some difficulty at a given time. Therefore, the use of a tool where the students can consult their doubts is extremely valuable. In addition to solving problems, the students will also be exercising their autonomy by proactively seeking possible solutions.
  4. Discussion platforms:
Having access to an integrated platform that facilitates discussions through virtual environments is a playful way to engage students to be more participatory in debates and to encourage critical thinking when formulating opinions and arguments.
